Bobs Three Birds

I know I have written about the birds outside my kitchen window before, I don't mean to be redundant on the topic.  However, I consciously caught myself this weekend, on Saturday morning, cleaning up after breakfast … and I was watching their feathery displays, totally caught up in them.  More interestingly, my head was quiet.  I didn't hear the girls fighting, I didn't hear the water running, I didn't hear the TV, I didn't hear the dryer humming.  Watching the birds literally snapped me out of whatever chaos I was in just a minute prior, you know, that chaos that we all experience as parents of young, active, curious, inquisitive, excitable minds. As if to remind me that there is a whole other world outside of the one I was living in that moment.  Perhaps one of the best reminders that nature can provide us with.  Not unlike stopping to smell the roses.  So simple, so pure, so true.  While I'm thinking about what needs to get done that day, the ants are marching and lifting and carrying and following; the birds are singing and looking and eating and pecking; the flowers are blooming; the leaves are swaying; the sun is shining.

And then tonight, I was bathing the girls, and I found myself singing Bob Marley's "Three Little Birds", but this time the words meant something different to me.  Hadley said, "Hey Mom, I like that song".  And I thought, I do too.  The birds, pirched on Bob's doorstep were telling him that everything would be all right.  Maybe Bob had it right.  Maybe waking up and smiling at the rising sun is how we should greet each day.  And maybe what I'm realizing in watching the birds, outside my kitchen window, is that it's okay to get lost in something other than the laundry, dishes, and noise.  Don't worry.  It will all get done.  Don't worry.  Enjoy the simple things.  Don't worry.  Just see your daughters.  Don't worry.  Everything is okay.

The lyrics, we all know so well.  Maybe they will just give you a memory of a different time, but I like this song now, in a whole new way.

THREE LITTLE BIRDS

Don't worry about a thing,

'Cause every little thing gonna be all right.

Singin: Don't worry about a thing,

'Cause every little thing gonna be all right!

Rise up this mornin',

Smile with the risin' sun,

Three little birds

Each by my doorstep

Singin' sweet songs

Of melodies pure and true,

Sayin', ("This is my message to you-ou-ou:")

Singin': "Don't worry 'bout a thing,

"Cause every little thing gonna be all right."

Singin: "Don't worry (don't worry) 'bout a thing,

'Cause every little thing gonna be all right!"

Rise up this mornin',

Smile with the risin' sun,

Three little birds

Each by my doorstep

Singin' sweet songs

Of melodies pure and true,

Sayin', ("This is my message to you-ou-ou:")

Singin': "Don't worry 'bout a thing, worry about a thing, oh!

"Every little thing gonna be all right.  Don't worry!"

Singin: "Don't worry about a thing" - I won't worry!

'Cause every little thing gonna be all right."

Singin': "Don't worry 'bout a thing,

"Cause every little thing gonna be all right" - I won't worry!

Singin: "Don't worry about a thing,

'Cause every little thing gonna be all right."

Singin': " Don't worry about a thing, oh no!

'Cause every little thing gonna be all right!"
